The 55,000
hectare malaria-free Pilanesberg National Park is one of South Africa's best
kept secrets and ranks among the largest national parks in southern Africa.
It is situated on the remains of a 1,200 million year old extinct alkaline
volcanic crater - one of only three such extensive craters in the world.
The Pilanesberg countryside comprises numerous hills and broad open plains
and is well stocked with game and bird species - daily sightings of Africa's
"Big Five" (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo) is nothing out of
the ordinary and for those with an interest in bird-watching, over 360
species have been recorded in the Park.
